New York City Wedding Angel Orensanz Foundation - Nicole + Marco - Photographer's Day off

This is a personal blog in which I wanted to share my time enjoying a wedding of one of my closest friends Nicole and her new husband Marco. Lately my husband and I rarely attend weddings since I'm always the one shooting them! The first year my husband and I met in 2008, we went to about 6 weddings. For the first year of dating, he must have wanted to stick around if he liked taking me to weddings! This time around, we dressed up to witness the beautiful union of a friend who has climbed mountains and ran miles in many marathons, to finally run into her one and only. They met while picking up their numbers for a marathon and the rest was history.  Congratulations Nicole and Marco! Your first dance truly depicted your love for one another. Yes, this New York wedding photographer couldn't help but bring her camera...I had to remember the wedding as I saw it! How to Prepare for your Engagement Photo Session & What to Wear - NYC Wedding Engagement Photography

NYC-Wedding-Photographer-SouthStreet-Seaport-Engagement-Photos-Ideas-Katrina-and-Nick-WEB-106.jpg
It's the high-end of wedding season and with New Yorck City wedding engagement photography sessions still underway, couples are still inquiring how to prepare for their photo session. Whatever time of year, whether it's the Fall season with beautiful leaves hanging on before winter arrives, or the Holiday season with fun lights and decorations, or the spring and summer season, which is the most popular engagement booking dates, couples are always in need of guidance on how to prepare for their engagement photos. They also need help with determining what to wear for their first photo shoot and as photographers, it's important we help all our clients feel ready for this first part of their journey. The more couples are prepared, the more comfortable they will be in front of the camera and they'll easily see how this trial-run before their big wedding day can be a walk through the park!! Here are some points I've made a habit of letting clients know...and it can also apply to any photography session:
NYC Wedding Photographer South Street Seaport Engagement Photos Ideas Katrina and Nick

1. Choose a location that best fits your personality and that has a place of meaning. Couples tend to me more comfortable in a surrounding they already know. However, many of my couples are from out of town so if they're not flying me or traveling me to a different location other than New York City, they come to me and I advise them a few locations that fits their personality and what they're looking for in a photo shoot.

2. I tell couples to dress however they feel is comfortable for them. Basically, whatever makes them feel good is best since we want a relaxed feel to their photos. If they want to dress up, they'll add the elegance and sexy factor to their photography session.

3. Let clients know to try not wearing busy patterns where one is wearing plaid, and the other is wearing stripes that just doesn't work. Fashion statements are everywhere, but not everyone understands how to put varying styles together. Most of the time I have my clients email me pictures of their outfits! If anything, letting clients know that bold colors are great for images is helpful enough.

4. If they have already chosen their wedding colors, then they can incorporate that color into their outfits as little details (a scarf, a shirt color, a blazer, a belt, etc). I do ask them to try not to wear too much black or white, but if they choose to do so to make sure they have a strong accent piece to give a pop of color and have that separation from all the black or white.

5. I have them think about wearing layers (from a nice jacket, to a sweater or cardigan that can be taken off...of course this depends on the season) so as the session progresses there can be a different look without changing an entire outfit.

6. I make sure clients view my website and get a feel for my style of shooting and what they can expect. I do let them know each photographer is different, so if there's a photo that inspires them, we can see if the inspiration can work in their session, but it's not going to look exactly like the picture.

7. I let them know that if they have any props (signs, flowers, scrabble pieces, iPhones with pictures, umbrella, anything!) then they should bring it and we can try to incorporate it in our session.

easy save the date sign in central park ny

8. Make sure to tell them you'll be shooting close-ups of their rings so they should make sure to have their ring cleaned if possible, have clean and neat fingernails, or get a manicure. I let them know to bring lotion as well so their hands look fresh. If there are any other details important to them like a special bracelet or cuff links they've gifted each other, then they should let me know in advance so I can make sure to get those details as well.

New York Engagement Photography Cushing cut ring

9. Clients can also bring lip gloss, chapstick, powder, tissues and walking shoes if necessary!

Brooklyn DUMBO engagement photography photo ideas fun

10. Speaking of shoes, have them cleaned if there are a lot more scruff in them and remember socks do at times show up in full body pictures (sitting down) so make sure they match...yes there was an instance where it didn't really match and I had to work around it. It wasn't a big deal, but still a good point to let clients know.

11. One of the most important FYIs I let client know is that we will be shooting rain or shine except in hurricane/thunderstorm weather.  I let them know we will plan the shoot accordingly closer to the date and if it rains we'll plan to shoot closer to overhang areas or just have fun in the rain! Of course it's up to your business model how you want to handle your re-scheduling process.

Additional Must-Know and how to prepare for your engagement sessions:

1. Ladies! Make sure you pay attention to your eye makeup since we do want your beautiful eyes to show. Eyeliner and good mascara are a must to help exemplify the windows to your soul. I love it when ladies smile with just their eyes in addition to real laughter and enjoyment.

2. For makeup, you can apply  like you normal, although make it a bit heavier if you want it to show through the photos. Bring the basics with you to our shoot for quick touch ups.
New York City Engagement Photos in Central Park French Bulldog Mike + Melissa
3. Ladies and Gentlemen, make sure to moisturize your lips before and during the shoot. Having dry and cracked lips are difficult to touch up later in the pictures and most photographers will charge additional fee for heavier and more lengthy editing. This goes for moisturizing arms and legs. Let your skin glow! However, DO NOT do any tanning before your engagement session then decide to wear a strapless dress. Tan lines are a no-no! We can say the same thing about your wedding!
4. For those that wear glasses, remember that some glasses reflect light and may cause a glare and shadows over your eyes. Having to edit out glare and shadows takes a lot of time and usually is done by a more trained editor, which again is an additional fee. Photographers do not want their clients to change their look, so couples, consider going to your eye doctor or optometrist to maybe add-on a glare-free coating to your glasses if they have the option. This should be done at least two weeks before your session to get your glasses ready for your session.
5. Bring any hair spray, brush/comb, etc. again for some quick fixes in between photos. Definitely bring clips or bobby pins, hair ties, and whatever else you normally use for your hair.

As you can see, many of the above can apply to any photo shoot, whether it's an engagement session, or a wedding. If you do not remember to do any of the above, that's OK! This is just a guide to ensure you have enough information to prepare you for your photo session. As you can see, many of my couples are either dressed up with dresses and suits, or a sun dress and a nice shirt and pants for the men, to the more casual T-shirt and jeans. Many of my couples book multiple hours so we can have various wardrobe changes and go through multiple locations. However it is you want your engagement session to be, in the end, just enjoy, relax, and trust your photographer!

New York Wedding Photography Staten Island & New Jersey - Palisadium - S + E

It is always a pleasure when a couple books you for their engagement photos and then love those photos then book you for the wedding! I enjoyed capturing Samantha and Eugene's New York engagement photos at the High Line and honored to have captured their  wedding. They both got ready at the Hilton Garden Inn in Staten Island. If you look closely you can see Samantha and Eugene's special friend with Samantha as she got ready. Can't leave home without him! While I was capturing the ladies getting ready, my 2nd photographer, Hendrick, was capturing the men getting ready and hanging out. It definitely is worth having two sets of eyes for a wedding! The ceremony took place at the beautiful St.Patrick's Place also located in Staten Island New York. When Samantha walked down the aisle Eugene had tears in his eyes as he watched his bride make her way down the aisle with her parents. It was a beautiful moment and when they said their vows, and the priest announced Eugene may kiss his bride, the church rang with applause. Right after Samantha and Eugene did their secret handshake commemorating the moment. We were off to the Palisadium in New Jersey for the reception and everyone was happy to welcome the new Mr and Mrs into the dance floor. It was a day to remember and a New York and New Jersey wedding photography we cannot forget.

Congratulations again to the fabulous bride and groom!

New York Wedding Photography - Marina Del Rey, Bronx

New_York_Wedding_Photographer_Marina_Del_Rey_Bronx-1336.jpg

So happy to be able to share these photos from Kathryn and Joseph's  New York wedding photography! The wedding was held in the Bronx, NY and it was a blast! The bride got ready in their home while the groom got ready at his parent's home a few minutes down the street. First, as soon as I walked in K & J's beautiful home I was excited to see all their engagement photos were up on the wall! Now they're going to need room for all these wedding photos of their fun and very special day. When I was photographing Kathryn's dress and shoes, I adored the "I DO" crystals placed on the bottom of her David Tutera shoes!!! I also loved how the ladies wore a beautiful royal purple gown. The gown had a one-shoulder and showed everyone's beautiful personalities. These ladies all knew how to be fashionable! They just complimented the men who instead of wearing the traditional black tuxedo, opted for a gray suit. On our way to the church, the bride was whisked off by her dad in Silverstar Limousine's Rolls Royce. As soon as Kathryn walked down that aisle, she only had eyes for Joseph and he in turn couldn't look away. As they said their vows and with all their family and friends as witness, they set off to begin their new journey as husband and wife. Although, before they continue on we all continued to Marina Del Rey for a fun-filled reception. When I was taking detailed photos during the cocktail hour, I immediately noticed their "high-five" themed cake topper. It's what Kathryn and Joseph loved to do when they're having fun and are excited, so there definitely was  a lot of high-fives all around. There was also a lot of dipping action going on! Joseph loves to dip Kathryn and they do it well! All in all, it really was a fabulous time and everyone had a blast. It was even a treat for the audience when a few friends walked into the dance floor with sparklers in tow as they circled the bride and groom and lit their way to love and happiness. Congratulations Kathryn and Joseph!!! Here's to many years and a lifetime of love and happy memories. The Knot Best Of Wedding 2014 winner New York Wedding Photographer

This is an amazing start to the Holiday season! It's "quieter" with just engagement sessions and holiday sessions these next few weeks (unless there's a last minute wedding!) and catching up on editing (never mind, that's still a busy schedule), but it seems we seem to be getting a lot of good news lately! Today we just found out that this New York wedding photographer and my team has been voted The Knot Best of Wedding 2014!!! This means we have been voted among the #1 photographers in our market and it's all thanks to all my brides, grooms, couples, clients and more! You all were such a blast to photograph and it's because of your reviews that has shown others that Angelica Criscuolo Photography is truly the photographer for your wedding, engagement, destination weddings and events! I love what I do, and the team I choose love photographing weddings and events. As many of my clients know, they are in good hands and future clients should know there's nothing we value more than ensuring your special day is memorable.

This is just a great follow up to being published on the Engagement 101 Magazine!! Thank you God and Jesus and yes the Holy Spirit for the blessings. Maybe it has something to do with visiting the Vatican two weeks ago? :-)Kidding aside, we can't be thankful enough for all your support.

To always return the blessings we've earned, we actually volunteered to photograph this event TONIGHT, November 26, 2013. UNICEF's Next Generation - Emergency Relief Fundraiser-Coctail for Children in the Philippines. Consider stopping by or if you can't, show your support and give what you can through the donation site. Thank you!

Star Struck! Meeting Jasmine Star & JD at The FIX New York

JasmineStar001.jpg

It's not every day a person gets to meet their idol and get really star struck. I'm happy to have met one important one, Jasmine Star and JD during The FIX. The photography world know Jasmine as an international wedding photographer based in Orange County, California who was voted as one of the Top 10 Wedding Photographer by American Photo Magazine  in 2010. She has built her business through hard work and perseverance and is now helping the photography world by sharing her experiences, providing much sought after advice, and stressing the importance of building excellent relationships with other photographers. JD is not just her supportive husband, but part of the team that photographs the gorgeous work Jasmine Star provides to her brides and grooms. Knowing how lucky they both are to be working side by side I couldn't help but be envious since I do miss just hanging out with my husband :-). As much as I want what Jasmine and JD have, the fact that I have one amazing and supportive husband is even more important to me. Seeing Jasmine and JD together just affirmed my belief that I am one lucky gal to be following my passion and art and to have the support I need at home to keep me motivated.

After the event, I posted the picture below to Jasmine's Facebook page and like a school girl I was happy and excited when she replied and thanked me. I should be thanking her again and again. As I posted on her Facebook wall, she really lit a fire on my "you know what" so I can bring my business forward...and I'm not looking back! So "THANK YOU" again Jasmine, for educating and supporting your fellow photographers and encouraging us to care about each other.

Learning from Jasmine was very inspiring. She and her team created theFIX to "help identify the weaknesses within a business, maximize entrepreneurial strengths, and outline the course of action to employ in 2012." Basically it helped create an understanding of how to grow one's business, avoid mistakes, marketing strategies and achieve the life dreamed by any photographer...to be free to take beautiful photographs and be happy with one's work and life. I've learned so much and now I've been saying I'm channeling my inner J* to ensure my business grows and moves forward so I can keep clients happy as well as my home life happy.

Many times when someone asked a question, J* would start with "This may rub you the wrong way...BUT.." and then she gave a reality check and ensured that there are many things that may hurt (breaking off a relationship with a client or vendor) along the way when you have your business, but it's better to deal with them with confidence and  to ensure you are moving forward and not moving backwards. After all, "sacrifice doesn’t guarantee success, it’s merely a prerequisite of success."

Here I am, happy as can be I'm standing next to someone I look up to (literally and figuratively!) and because of J* I'm making changes and not looking back.

Before meeting J*, me and a few fellow photographers were taking pictures in front of theFIX's backdrop and a few seconds later, in jumps Jasmine Star! I was clueless at first, but after realizing the three of us were screaming like banshees. Yes we were screaming with our mouths formed in smiles hoping someone is taking a picture lol. I think this is why Jasmine is laughing at us...or hopefully with us :-). (Jasmine Star, Cecilia Grace Mizin, Me, Janelle Rodriguez)

After getting a few pictures, I had to try Jasmine's seat. Very comfy indeed!

Jasmine Star is also Editor In Chief of EXPOSED. Here she reads excerpts from one of the articles written in the magazine, which covers a variety of subjects from Jasmine's life as a photographer.

During Jasmine's presentation, she stressed in building a very good network with other photographers. Thanks to Cassi Claire (Gardner) who created a Jasmine Star: The FIX NYC group, some of us were able to meet up, get acquainted, and put real faces other than our Facebook profile pics to the names in our group!  Here there's Christina Blanarovich, Me, Melania Timpani-Shertzer, Janelle Rodriguez and the rest of the group included (and pardon if I didn't get a pic of you or left out your names!!) Tessie Reveliotis, Arlene Chambers, Bob chambers, Cassie Claire, Tammy Cedar, Vanessa Belanovich, Allison O'Hara McCafferty, John, Phil Franchina, Michele Yacovello, Judie Zevack Castro, Kevin Mahoney, Robin Bakes, Sena Dzogbenuku Danquah, and so much more. Thank you all for making it a great night of learning, networking, and making friends!

Looking forward to a reunion with the group and those that missed the meet before The FIX NYC!

New York City Head Shots - RW

2012-02-01RaquelWagnerFINAL-3.jpg

Wanted to share a few New York City head shots I did with a client last week...was it last week? Did I lose a week? The things my brain goes through! A former client referred my services and my new client, Raquel, was in need of last-minute head shots...When I say last minute I mean she needed them by 11AM the NEXT day! So I went to my home studio, grabbed my equipment and came back into Manhattan to meet my client. It was a short session, but very successful. Head shot sessions do not need to be over an hour long, but usually I take time with clients and go to different locations to get the lifestyle feel of a modern head shot. When you take an individual, whether an actor, singer, writer, etc, casting directors tend to want to see them in their natural elements so they can imagine this person in their show, commercial, movie, etc. Nothing wrong with studio head shots. If you have a very good photographer who takes their time and makes sure the lighting is done right, then you will get beautiful head shots. Because we were limited in time and location, I met my client in Grand Central, found a secluded area with enough lighting to work with (which was fine since I also brought my torch light and reflector) and we got working. I had Raquel change into a blue shirt to help her gorgeous eyes show more, and below are the end results. Tips for anyone doing head shots, shoot at a higher angle so the client is looking a bit up at you to open their eyes. Another very good tip is to get multiple angles. Raquel actually liked her left side more, but as a client ask to get different angles so you can see what your face looks likes. You never know if a side of your profile actually looks best when taken by a professional photographer.

Portraits Are More Than Paper - Why photographs are very important and lasts forever....

Today I read a post by Jeanine Thurston, re-posted by so many photographers and non-photographers alike, and the letter that created the post stirred old memories that I too had to post it: http://fototails.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/a-letter-on-my-doorstep-portraits-are-more-than-paper/ After reading the letter, I cannot help but feel this person's regret of not understanding how pictures are so much more lasting than "trivial" items. Portraits and photographs  are more than a piece of paper, since it helps memorialize an event or a person or a special memory of a newborn being born or children growing up with families, a wedding, and more. From time to time I do get the "oh no! there she is again!" when I take out my camera and start photographing family and friends when we're together privately or out so I can capture those memories.  Many say their memories are in their mind and do not need photographs or videos of an event, but for me, personally, I love having a tangible visual of an event or memory with my husband, family and friends. Why do I do it? I do it because I know memories are fleeting. Getting older, my memory is not what it was years ago...and that is scary. How many times have we told ourselves I'll remember this moment forever...but later stumble upon a picture (maybe years or weeks later) taken by someone else and you truly forgot that moment occurred? I LOVE going through my pictures from time to time and remembering time spent with those I love. I have folders of digital images going back from 1999 with a miscellaneous folder where I added scanned images of older paper photographs.

Maybe some think that going overboard...and some may think its not...but each of us must do what feels right and capturing memories the way I know how feels the right way. I also take pictures because I know often time pictures are all we may have left of someone one day. A sad thought but true...and it was true for Karen L. who wrote the letter. Her letter has made this past hour an emotional roller coaster, leaving people wondering why I look like I've been crying...so here I am pretending to have a cold, but in reality I'm remembering the feeling of not having that picture I wanted and needed of someone who suddenly passed on. When my father passed away in 2007, I was creating a memorial board of him, and realized that the last picture I took with him and I alone was taken...well I couldn't find one. Honestly the last good one (not blurry or anything else) was from 2001 when I graduated college. There was one picture from my birthday party my dad threw for me at his house in 2005 that had me, him and my siblings together, and I had to cut out my siblings so I can frame that picture of me and my dad in my apartment. The picture was also blurry, but it was all I had standing next to him. Other pictures before he passed was of me taking the picture, or a group picture. Just remembering that realization made me panic. This was the eve of my father's wake and I'm scrambling to find pictures of my dad and me and I couldn't find a one.

Photographs of any event or a portrait of your family or pictures with friends are something that should not be taken for granted. For many they are not just a want or a need, but a priceless memory that can be passed on. If you haven't read Karen L's letter, read on: http://fototails.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/a-letter-on-my-doorstep-portraits-are-more-than-paper/

Thank you Jeanine for posting this letter. Karen L. and many more are in my prayers.

Courtney and Cesar's New York City Engagement Party - Ritz Carlton, Battery Park

What an amazing engagement party! Courtney and Cesar are definitely a loving pair and truly meant to be. Their vibrant personality, love for one another, and love for their family and friends showed with each laugh, gesture and smile. The view at the Rise, on the 14th floor of the Ritz Carlton Battery Park location was just amazing! The entire terrace overlooks the Hudson River, the skyline of Jersey City, and of course a view of the Statue of Liberty. We hurried to take pictures while the sun was setting, but although the beautiful sunset was over, the skyline of Jersey was a spectacular view as well as the lit Lady Liberty. A surprise fireworks display was also  the evening's entertainment. A perfect night to remember. Many of the family flew from Kansas for the event and for them the trip was worth it. Here's a few pictures from the event. Enjoy and congratulations again to Courtney and Cesar and their family! Misha Nonoo - New York City Fashion Week by Angelica Criscuolo Photography

Meeting Misha Nonoo during fashion week was a colorful sight to see! New York City welcomed the highly acclaimed designer who had her show at MADE in Chelsea by the Highline. Her clothing line was truly feminine, with a touch of masculinity in a few pieces she created. Misha received her inspiration during her time in Italy and the Mediterranean. Her show, designed by Celadon & Celery Events, was filled with live Olive trees in various species. The smell and sight gave the feeling we were in Europe! See below her gorgeous creations and you can see how anyone would love to be these models wearing such fabulous clothing. Makeup was provided by MAC and the shoes were from Aldo's who both sponsored the shows held at Milk Studios. Enjoy and remember to stop by my facebook page and "like"! :-)

The Busy Girls Network Expo Event - Marriott Teaneck, NJ by Angelica Criscuolo Photography

"Busy Girls" from all walks of life in the Northern New Jersey and New York metro area gathered yesterday at the Marriott at Glenpointe in Teaneck, New Jersey to participate in The Busy Girls Expo event. Entrepreneurs and many professionals in the financial field, photography (yours truly!), public relations and catering/cake business and so much more filled the ballroom as each guest and vendor chatted and learned from one another to build their respective network and referral contact. I met so many wonderful women ready to help one another that it was truly empowering and encouraging! Of course we cannot forget the men who also attended to help, assist, and support the event.
