It’s the height of wedding season and with New York City wedding engagement photography sessions underway, couples continue to inquire how to prepare for their engagement photo session. As photographers, it’s important I help all my clients feel ready and be prepared for their photo session. An engagement session in Dumbo, The High Line, Central Park, Gantry State Park, Grand Central, Park Avenue, or any location is their trial run before their big day. Ensuring you get the best experience is important. Here are some tips I’ve given to past clients to help them prepare for their photoshoot.
NYC Photographers in Las Vegas for Glamour Photography
Last week I spent a few days working in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a wedding photographer from New York City, the chance to photograph in the desert, with a different scenery than an urban landscape, really appealed to me. I brought with me a few Sew Trendy Accessories dresses, a few more gown dresses, and photographed beautiful women with the Nevada mountains as a backdrop. Just in time for International Women's Day, I wanted to depict strong women, who still showed their feminine side while looking powerful in the glamour photos. Pictured here is Karenn from Las Vegas, a fellow Filipina who I met in Vegas and she was amazing. For the photographers out there, I captured the photograph with my Canon EOS 5D MarkIV, 24-70 2.8L at 27mm, Aperture 2.8, ISO 100, SS 1/200. I had a -3 stop ND Lee filter on my lens and lit Karenn with the help of Magmod spheres, grids and CTO gel on my Flashpoint Godox AD200 camera right on a Westcott light stand fired at full power.
The sun was setting behind the mountains at just after 3:24pm so it was still bright light outside. So bright with the sun directly in front of me, that I always caution to make sure photographers are keeping their eyes and cameras safe from the direct sun. However, at this point the sun, as seen from the photo, just started to go behind the mountain so I was able to open my lens to 2.8aperture from 5.0.
Other equipment used for this session included my SpiderPro Dual Camera System belt from Spider Camera Holster (will never leave home without it!), ThinkTank bag to carry my lenses and flash, SanDisk CF and SD cards, oh and RayBan sunglasses because the Nevada sun is bright!
Follow my Facebook page to see more of my work as well as my Instagram page. Feel free to ask any questions about the shoot whether you want to setup a photo shoot for yourself (portrait, engagement photos, pre wedding photos, anniversary photos, couple photography, bridal photos, headshots, etc), or if you're a photographer and want to learn more techniques.
Enjoy your day and make sure you do something fabulous today!
xoxo

New York Wedding Photographer in Brooklyn Engagement Photos in DUMBO | My & Michael
What a fabulous day to take a few Brooklyn engagement photos. A New York wedding photographer's dream is to have a stylish couple and a great backdrop. Well here's a teaser from My and Michael's engagement photo session with the Brooklyn Bridge and Freedom Tower as a backdrop. We did start our day at Jacques Torres, (wicked hot chocolate!) and I can't wait to share those photos so stay tuned and follow my blog and my Facebook page. Make sure to "Like" and "Follow"! Great job My and Michael! You did amazing and you are definitely going to enjoy taking your wedding photos!
For photographers who wanted to learn off-camera lighting techniques, continue reading below!
I wanted to keep the day using natural light, but in this shot below, I wanted to show the dramatic blue skies that showed off in the distance, which you couldn't see when just using natural light. With how My and Michael were dressed, it called for drama and a contrast to the rest of their Engagement photos shoot in Brooklyn. Exposing for the couple would mean losing details from the clouds. I did try to bring the clouds back, but using off-camera lighting, it was done in-camera.

Macy's 4th of July Fireworks | East River | Independence Day
Happy Independence Day everyone! Hope you're all enjoying the amazing fireworks celebrating this amazing county! Having hundreds of people with their camera phone or their iPad up in the air didn't faze me. I mean, every wedding reception is like a sea of smartphones and iPads. It is what it is! For my fellow photographers, how did you photograph the Macy's 4th of July fireworks celebration in the East River for the Independence Day celebration? Or fireworks wherever you were this evening?
To share my settings, I set my wide angel on my tripod and the lens was set to infinite on manual. I used Bulb mode with aperture ranging from f5.6-f13 (mostly at f/11) and ISO 100. I pressed my cable release for 4-10 seconds at a time, or to fulfill a full starburst with the rocket shooting up in the air to get the tail, the the fireworks prior to it disappearing. I tend to not follow the trails all the way at the end since the trails tend to be not as crisp and it becomes "messy" to my eyes. To each their own!
NYC Long Island City Queens Wedding Engagement Photos - Gantry State Park East River
Here are some more fun NYC Long Island City Queens wedding engagement photos inspiration from Elisabeth and Rob's engagement session. Normally sessions are an hour long, but when we're having fun, I never keep track of time. With these two we were just laughing and strolling along the "shores" of the East River and next thing you know the sun is setting. One of the final shots was with me on the ground (a normal occurrence...not because I fell...but that happens too - it's fine so long as the camera is OK!) taking a shot of Elisabeth and Rob walking towards the camera, strolling along. I then asked them to kiss and in that instance, I realized the sun is about to set, giving the sky a blue, purple pink hue!!! I quickly decided to heck with natural light, let's get some off-camera flash (OCF) lighting goodness and get these two in front of that back drop. Why OCF? If you see the 2nd photo using natural light, I exposed for the couple, making the sky washed out. But if you expose for the sky, then bring off-camera lighting into the mix, then the OCF light makes the couple pop from the background. Adding another OCF behind them separate them from the background even more, creating a pretty halo effect.
I had a light stand behind them with a speed light set to 1/64th power, and my Voice Activated Light stand (aka VAL...aka amazing assistant ever who's name isn't VAL) 45 degrees to my left, the couple's right. With the RapidBox (full power) tilted towards the couple with the edge of the RapidBox on the same plane as their eyes, we started shooting amazing photos I would hang on the wall in my own home! For the photographers out there who wants to know about the set up, I believe the camera was set to 1/200 sec at 4.0-5.0, and ISO 320-400. I was using a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II at the time to bring the city closer to my subjects. Yes, I planned the use of my light settings and lens for a reason.
With that, here's some more fun photos and enjoy! "LIKE" Angelica Criscuolo Photography and follow us to stay updated with Elisabeth and Rob's wedding as well as follow and stay updated with my work.
