How to Start Planning a Destination Wedding

Barbados-Destination-wedding-photographer-from-NYC-

For all of you who have ever planned a wedding, I bet 99.9% of you all have considered throwing caution to the wind and deliberated a destination wedding.  After the romantic idea of sweeping all of your guests off to the destination of your dreams has taken the backseat to reality, you may realize planning an out-of-state, or out-of-country, wedding can be a lot more work than you anticipated. So with the help of our friends at the Caribbean Shopping Channel we’ve developed some pointers on how to get started planning a destination wedding, outside of general wedding planning tips.  Caribbean Shopping Channel is a televised and online shopping network that caters to the US, Canada, and the Caribbean, and they have an amazing destination wedding curated shop, so who better than them to help us?!

1.  Research whether guests will need any shots or travel documents (passports, visas, vaccinations) in order to go where you’re planning your wedding.  The more barriers of entry there are to get to your wedding, the more likely guests will RSVP no.  Make it as easy as possible for them.

2.  Consider the date and location compared to the seasonal weather during that time (unless you don’t mind walking around during a rainy season in your beautiful wedding dress).

3.  Know the currency exchange rate so when you are talking to vendors, you are able to knowingly convert their currency into USD.  And with the power of the internet, research local vendors who have high customer satisfaction ratings.  You can also turn to your venue contact to make recommendations on all the other wedding vendors available.  Of course I make a pretty amazing wedding photographer myself (hint, hint).

4.  Find a local wedding coordinator.  You may think you can do it alone because you’re master organizer,

and I’m sure you can, but it really, really, really helps to have someone onsite at the location who knows his/her way around the area.  Even if it’s just the venue coordinator who is willing to help make recommendations for you and take over day-of duties, every little bit helps, especially when you’re in an area you’re not familiar with.

5. Research marriage license requirements and confirm with the local tourism board.

6.  Consider the attire of your bridal party.  Don’t make them wear heavy material if they’ll be standing at the wedding sweating in muggy temperatures, and vice versa at colder locations.

7. Create a destination wedding website for your guests that lists all pertinent information such as any travel documents they’ll need to obtain, the currency exchange rate, hotel blocks, transportation to and from the airport, transportation to and from the wedding, and things to do in the area.

Good luck!  I had a destination wedding and loved every moment of it. Trust me, it’s do-able with the right planning.

Notre Dame Cathedral- Paris, France Photography

Many hearts broke when the world heard that a massive fire engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. The historical landmark, and house of worship, took 182 years to build (starting from 1163AD to 1345AD) and yet, the massive structure was burnt in just a few hours, bringing down a big part of Paris’ history. As of this morning, it’s good to know that the beautiful Rose Windows, made of 13th Century Glass, survived, as well as the main bell, Emanuelle - rang to signal to Parisians the end of World War II, the facade and the two bell towers (previously the tallest structure in Paris until the Eiffel Tower), the cathedral Great Organ, and a few relics including the Crown of Thorns, thought to have been placed on the head of Jesus.

The last time my husband and I saw the beauty of the church was just this past fall when we celebrated our 8-year anniversary. A long layover in Paris from Vienna allowed us to grab a quick lunch in front of Notre Dame before our evening flight. Prior to our quick visit, we celebrated our 3-year anniversary in Paris and Rome in 2013. That year, I said many prayers inside the church, and we were fortunate to witness a full mass taking place. The glorious towering towers, the haunting beauty of the architecture within, will always be in our memories.

I haven’t shared many of the photos in 2013, here are some from last year (phone photos), and from 2013. It’s not the same as seeing Notre Dame Cathedral, but hopefully a few will still feel as if they were there as they view the photos through my lens.

Hawaii_Wedding_Photographer_Oahu_Destination_web-504.jpg

Sharing more photos from this fabulous Oahu, Hawaii Destination Wedding that I was honored to capture! Love traveling and when traveling to capture beautiful moments in a beautiful island with beautiful people, it's just magical! The wedding took place at the Hale Ohana House's Terrace where we had access to the beach to get beautiful classic Hawaii backdrop. Sheila just looks amazing in her Pnina Tornai wedding dress from Kleinfeld's Bridal with her Badgley Mischka shoes and Alex just looked dashing in his Mark Ecko gray suit. So many family and friends came to wish them well and even with rain and a storm, it held of for their ceremony. Congratulations Sheila and Alex!!! We love you guys!

Portraits Are More Than Paper - Why photographs are very important and lasts forever....

Today I read a post by Jeanine Thurston, re-posted by so many photographers and non-photographers alike, and the letter that created the post stirred old memories that I too had to post it: http://fototails.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/a-letter-on-my-doorstep-portraits-are-more-than-paper/ After reading the letter, I cannot help but feel this person's regret of not understanding how pictures are so much more lasting than "trivial" items. Portraits and photographs  are more than a piece of paper, since it helps memorialize an event or a person or a special memory of a newborn being born or children growing up with families, a wedding, and more. From time to time I do get the "oh no! there she is again!" when I take out my camera and start photographing family and friends when we're together privately or out so I can capture those memories.  Many say their memories are in their mind and do not need photographs or videos of an event, but for me, personally, I love having a tangible visual of an event or memory with my husband, family and friends. Why do I do it? I do it because I know memories are fleeting. Getting older, my memory is not what it was years ago...and that is scary. How many times have we told ourselves I'll remember this moment forever...but later stumble upon a picture (maybe years or weeks later) taken by someone else and you truly forgot that moment occurred? I LOVE going through my pictures from time to time and remembering time spent with those I love. I have folders of digital images going back from 1999 with a miscellaneous folder where I added scanned images of older paper photographs.

Maybe some think that going overboard...and some may think its not...but each of us must do what feels right and capturing memories the way I know how feels the right way. I also take pictures because I know often time pictures are all we may have left of someone one day. A sad thought but true...and it was true for Karen L. who wrote the letter. Her letter has made this past hour an emotional roller coaster, leaving people wondering why I look like I've been crying...so here I am pretending to have a cold, but in reality I'm remembering the feeling of not having that picture I wanted and needed of someone who suddenly passed on. When my father passed away in 2007, I was creating a memorial board of him, and realized that the last picture I took with him and I alone was taken...well I couldn't find one. Honestly the last good one (not blurry or anything else) was from 2001 when I graduated college. There was one picture from my birthday party my dad threw for me at his house in 2005 that had me, him and my siblings together, and I had to cut out my siblings so I can frame that picture of me and my dad in my apartment. The picture was also blurry, but it was all I had standing next to him. Other pictures before he passed was of me taking the picture, or a group picture. Just remembering that realization made me panic. This was the eve of my father's wake and I'm scrambling to find pictures of my dad and me and I couldn't find a one.

Photographs of any event or a portrait of your family or pictures with friends are something that should not be taken for granted. For many they are not just a want or a need, but a priceless memory that can be passed on. If you haven't read Karen L's letter, read on: http://fototails.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/a-letter-on-my-doorstep-portraits-are-more-than-paper/

Thank you Jeanine for posting this letter. Karen L. and many more are in my prayers.
