New York City Wedding Photography Surprise Proposal & Engagement - M & A

5U0A1045.jpg

These two Washington DC residents were in for one of the best adventures of their lives! Alena had no idea that Matt had a surprise in store for her when they travelled last minute to New York City. She thought it was his surprise gift to her for finishing Law school, (congrats again!) and it was. Little did she know there were more surprises in store for her on a beautiful spring afternoon in Central Park New York by Gapstow bridge...(known by many as the Home Alone Bridge). I LOVE capturing New York City wedding surprise proposal photography and the engagement session to follow and this was definitely one of the best!!! Here's a living image of the post-event :-). Stay tuned for more teasers! More to follow!

How to Prepare for your Engagement Photo Session & What to Wear - NYC Wedding Engagement Photography

NYC-Wedding-Photographer-SouthStreet-Seaport-Engagement-Photos-Ideas-Katrina-and-Nick-WEB-106.jpg
It's the high-end of wedding season and with New Yorck City wedding engagement photography sessions still underway, couples are still inquiring how to prepare for their photo session. Whatever time of year, whether it's the Fall season with beautiful leaves hanging on before winter arrives, or the Holiday season with fun lights and decorations, or the spring and summer season, which is the most popular engagement booking dates, couples are always in need of guidance on how to prepare for their engagement photos. They also need help with determining what to wear for their first photo shoot and as photographers, it's important we help all our clients feel ready for this first part of their journey. The more couples are prepared, the more comfortable they will be in front of the camera and they'll easily see how this trial-run before their big wedding day can be a walk through the park!! Here are some points I've made a habit of letting clients know...and it can also apply to any photography session:
NYC Wedding Photographer South Street Seaport Engagement Photos Ideas Katrina and Nick

1. Choose a location that best fits your personality and that has a place of meaning. Couples tend to me more comfortable in a surrounding they already know. However, many of my couples are from out of town so if they're not flying me or traveling me to a different location other than New York City, they come to me and I advise them a few locations that fits their personality and what they're looking for in a photo shoot.

2. I tell couples to dress however they feel is comfortable for them. Basically, whatever makes them feel good is best since we want a relaxed feel to their photos. If they want to dress up, they'll add the elegance and sexy factor to their photography session.

3. Let clients know to try not wearing busy patterns where one is wearing plaid, and the other is wearing stripes that just doesn't work. Fashion statements are everywhere, but not everyone understands how to put varying styles together. Most of the time I have my clients email me pictures of their outfits! If anything, letting clients know that bold colors are great for images is helpful enough.

4. If they have already chosen their wedding colors, then they can incorporate that color into their outfits as little details (a scarf, a shirt color, a blazer, a belt, etc). I do ask them to try not to wear too much black or white, but if they choose to do so to make sure they have a strong accent piece to give a pop of color and have that separation from all the black or white.

5. I have them think about wearing layers (from a nice jacket, to a sweater or cardigan that can be taken off...of course this depends on the season) so as the session progresses there can be a different look without changing an entire outfit.

6. I make sure clients view my website and get a feel for my style of shooting and what they can expect. I do let them know each photographer is different, so if there's a photo that inspires them, we can see if the inspiration can work in their session, but it's not going to look exactly like the picture.

7. I let them know that if they have any props (signs, flowers, scrabble pieces, iPhones with pictures, umbrella, anything!) then they should bring it and we can try to incorporate it in our session.

8. Make sure to tell them you'll be shooting close-ups of their rings so they should make sure to have their ring cleaned if possible, have clean and neat fingernails, or get a manicure. I let them know to bring lotion as well so their hands look fresh. If there are any other details important to them like a special bracelet or cuff links they've gifted each other, then they should let me know in advance so I can make sure to get those details as well.

9. Clients can also bring lip gloss, chapstick, powder, tissues and walking shoes if necessary!

Brooklyn DUMBO engagement photography photo ideas fun

10. Speaking of shoes, have them cleaned if there are a lot more scruff in them and remember socks do at times show up in full body pictures (sitting down) so make sure they match...yes there was an instance where it didn't really match and I had to work around it. It wasn't a big deal, but still a good point to let clients know.

11. One of the most important FYIs I let client know is that we will be shooting rain or shine except in hurricane/thunderstorm weather.  I let them know we will plan the shoot accordingly closer to the date and if it rains we'll plan to shoot closer to overhang areas or just have fun in the rain! Of course it's up to your business model how you want to handle your re-scheduling process.

Additional Must-Know and how to prepare for your engagement sessions:

1. Ladies! Make sure you pay attention to your eye makeup since we do want your beautiful eyes to show. Eyeliner and good mascara are a must to help exemplify the windows to your soul. I love it when ladies smile with just their eyes in addition to real laughter and enjoyment.

2. For makeup, you can apply  like you normal, although make it a bit heavier if you want it to show through the photos. Bring the basics with you to our shoot for quick touch ups.
New York City Engagement Photos in Central Park French Bulldog Mike + Melissa
3. Ladies and Gentlemen, make sure to moisturize your lips before and during the shoot. Having dry and cracked lips are difficult to touch up later in the pictures and most photographers will charge additional fee for heavier and more lengthy editing. This goes for moisturizing arms and legs. Let your skin glow! However, DO NOT do any tanning before your engagement session then decide to wear a strapless dress. Tan lines are a no-no! We can say the same thing about your wedding!
4. For those that wear glasses, remember that some glasses reflect light and may cause a glare and shadows over your eyes. Having to edit out glare and shadows takes a lot of time and usually is done by a more trained editor, which again is an additional fee. Photographers do not want their clients to change their look, so couples, consider going to your eye doctor or optometrist to maybe add-on a glare-free coating to your glasses if they have the option. This should be done at least two weeks before your session to get your glasses ready for your session.
5. Bring any hair spray, brush/comb, etc. again for some quick fixes in between photos. Definitely bring clips or bobby pins, hair ties, and whatever else you normally use for your hair.

As you can see, many of the above can apply to any photo shoot, whether it's an engagement session, or a wedding. If you do not remember to do any of the above, that's OK! This is just a guide to ensure you have enough information to prepare you for your photo session. As you can see, many of my couples are either dressed up with dresses and suits, or a sun dress and a nice shirt and pants for the men, to the more casual T-shirt and jeans. Many of my couples book multiple hours so we can have various wardrobe changes and go through multiple locations. However it is you want your engagement session to be, in the end, just enjoy, relax, and trust your photographer!

I love it when couples say they're nervous about being in front of the camera...but next thing you know they're just having too much fun and I get dips and spontaneous laughter throughout the session! Kathryn and Joseph are truly one of those couples you would love to photograph. They're fun, sincere, in love, and will sit in the middle of Literary Walk for their NYC engagement photo ideas in Central Park. Talk about stopping traffic! Well foot traffic anyway. We're really looking forward to their spring 2014 wedding next March at the Marina Del Rey! Yes, we're already thinking about spring even though we haven't even felt the brunt of Fall yet! Hope you enjoy their photos!

I know I haven't been blogging lately, will do more of that in the upcoming months as it "slows" down for this New York wedding photographer, but until then, I'm glad to share these teasers from Reena and Jagsheer's New York engagement photo ideas session in Gantry State Park in LIC Queens! From the start they were both fun, energetic, and just filled with love for one another that they made it a BREEZE to photograph them and capture their personalities! You can see for yourself how this fashionable pair also love to stay fit and work out that they made sure to capture a few shots of them flexing. The two of them met at the gym so these photos reflect their relationship! Definitely stay tuned for photos from their wedding!!! Really can't wait to show their beautiful Hindu Wedding held at the Flushing Hindu Center close to my old stomping ground!

Marie & Don - Central Park In-Love Couple's Photography

DonMarie_NYC_CentralPark_Photo_Session-Ideas-Couples_002.jpg

When couples are in love, it just shows through the camera's lens. The way a couple can just be together and forget all about the world is just truly magical, and Marie and Don can teach us all a few lessons in love. They're both from Canada, but NYC and Central Park has a special meaning for them. Don surprised Marie with a trip to New York City when they first started dating. Marie had always wanted to go to NYC and experience what it had to offer so when they can they visit the city. It's hard to get away at times especially when you're running a school back in Canada, but love is patient, love is kind...and love will always be there when it's true as it patiently waits for a weekend of fun to just celebrate life. This couple's in-love NYC photography session was actually a gift for Don, who tends to be behind the camera so there isn't a lot of pictures of them together....what a great gift! I definitely feel the same way! :-) I just enjoyed this session so much and was very glad and thankfully blessed another wonderful client referred Marie and Don to me. To meet them and other couples, enjoying their company, learning their story, and finding out more about how they met and what their life is like definitely makes a full day's work worthwhile. It doesn't even make it feel like work, just all of us strolling through Central Park taking photographs by Bethesda Fountain and Bow Bridge and having fun on a beautiful winters day!  They were actually back in NYC this past Valentine's Day and in a few weeks they're off to Barbados to celebrate their anniversary...Don proposed to Marie at the Crane Resort! Yes, for those that has been following my blog, I was just there shooting a destination wedding...what a small world! Thank you Marie and Don for a fabulous photography session!

Brooklyn NY Maternity Session & Newborn Photography by Angelica Criscuolo Photography

Brooklyn__New_York_Maternity_PHotography_Ideas_0007.jpg

Congratulations to Pauline and Simeone! They had their gorgeous baby girl, Virginie, and she was such a sweetheart to photograph. I met Pauline on the N train from Sunset Park in Brooklyn, NY heading into the city. She turned to me and ask if I was a photographer. I was carrying gear and looking at images on my Canon Mark III. After I confirmed she smiled and happily said she was pregnant! As you can see, Pauline is gorgeous and tiny and she did not look pregnant at all! We started talking and she hired me to do her NYC maternity photography session in her Victorian home in Brooklyn, New York. We planned on shooting their baby's Brooklyn NY newborn photography session as well. At the time they didn't know if they were having a boy or a girl. On July 2, 2012, Virginie was born! She is such a beautiful angel and was such a good girl. She loved the attention and was comfortable with all the attention. Below are a few images from the maternity and newborn session. Congratulations once again! I am so happy I took that train in that moment since I met such a wonderful couple and gorgeous little girl as a result. Hope everyone enjoys the images! New York Engagement - Jacqueline & Thomas

2012-05-02JacquelineThomasEngagementSession-101.jpg

I'm so happy to share these photos from Jacqueline and Thomas' engagement session! We shot in the lower east side of Manhattan in Stuyvesant Town. With NY's unpredictable weather, it was raining a bit, but you couldn't tell with the way J + T smiled at one another! L-O-V-E was definitely in the air and these two college sweethearts deserves so much happiness. We centered our session in front of the Stuy-town fountain since that was the location where Thomas proposed. Very sweet and I wish them all the very best! Here's a few images from their fun session. My favorite (and J + T's favorite too) is the pose with the squirrell. I swear Mr. Squirrell...I shall name him Jack... wanted to be part of the shoot. He was staring at us for quite awhile until he finally photo bombed the picture! Sneaky little thing. He stole the show, but only for a moment :-). Guadalupe & Roy's Brooklyn Botanical Garden Engagement

2012-04-21GuadalupeRoyBKLYNBotanicalGardenFINAL-29.jpg

Had such a wonderful time at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in April 2012!!!! Guadalupe and Roy are such a fun couple to take pictures of and I'm very honored they chose me to capture their engagement. They both had a strong connection with one another and it shows! Love how couples are up for anything fun and here we definitely took advantage of the cherry blossoms that bloomed throughout the park. We were very lucky to catch the blooms before the trees started to turn vibrant greens. We got there early, right when the park opened, and in a few minutes the park was packed with onlookers enjoying the beautiful day. If you haven't been to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden then you have to go! It's beautiful all year, but the best time to go is during the peak of the cherry blossom season. Here are pictures of G + R enjoying just being together in the park. Thanks again for being such a great couple to work with!

In-Love Session in New York City's Chinatown

2012-02-20JenniferMokInLoveSessionFINAL-24.jpg

What photographer doesn't like doing an in-love session in New York City? My couple Jennifer and Michael took the streets of Chinatown where Jenn grew up...By the way, it turns out me and Jennifer went to the same high school together! Such a small world....and no I'm not about to pull out my yearbook, scan it and show you all how we looked like XX amount of years ago going to school in F.H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts and the Performing Arts. Whew, it's still too long to type or say. In any case, here we were in Chinatown and these two love birds were troopers! It was a pretty day, but still a little chilly, but they were happy to take off their jackets to get a couple of fun shots during their mini session. Thank you Jennifer and Michael for a fun photography session!

New York City Maternity Photography - Central Park

Recently did a New York Maternity photo session with Vincent and Jeryl who is expecting any day now! We went to Central Park with just J and V and a red balloon...and me...and my camera which is basically my baby...and hundreds of others roaming Central Park enjoying the gorgeous day.Congratulations to the soon-to-be mommy and daddy! Had a great time and the weather cooperated even on a February. The sun was shining and the red balloon had a mind of it's own...it could be mimicking how baby is feeling inside mommy's tummy...but it could just be the red balloon trying to grab all the attention. In any case, the theme V + J were going for worked out pretty well. Caught some great pictures, along with blue skies, really just equalled many great shots. We started off in the upper east side in front of the Alice and Wonderland statue...which by the way is crawling with kids after 11 AM so if you want to get some shots get there earlier! I always forget that statue is huge and if I wasn't working I'd be climbing the statue and playing with the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit with the kids...Where was I? Oh yes, get there early! My fault...weekend and forgot trains do not like to run on weekends. Sigh. In any case, walked by the boathouse and Bethesda Fountain and along the way took some frame pictures and of course the Red Balloon..maybe we'll call him "RB".... took center stage everywhere we went in Central Park. "RB" really created the mood and helped form the pictures. Of course, V + J are just such a cute couple that you can't help but fall in love with them and wish them all the best when their new bundle of joy arrives! THis reminds me, I need to get Jeryl's advice since this lovely woman still has her figure and you couldn't even tell she is pregnant if you weren't looking straight at her! I just wish the power above will grant me the same fortune. Enough about me, hope everyone enjoys these pictures.  I'll post them also on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/angelicacriscuolophotography. Thanks Vincent and Jeryl for allowing me to capture your maternity photography session! Too bad no one wanted to get "RB" and take him for a walk after our use...but it was enjoyable saying goodbye to him.

New York City Wedding of T+M on Valentine's Day

Congratulations again to Tina and Matt for starting their new adventure together on Valentine's Day! Here's a few teasers from their big day. A very simple ceremony for two very special individuals made this day even better. Good thing it was a warmer day last Tuesday and Tina and Matt were good sports about taking off their coats to get these great shots!

New York City Head Shots - RW

2012-02-01RaquelWagnerFINAL-3.jpg

Wanted to share a few New York City head shots I did with a client last week...was it last week? Did I lose a week? The things my brain goes through! A former client referred my services and my new client, Raquel, was in need of last-minute head shots...When I say last minute I mean she needed them by 11AM the NEXT day! So I went to my home studio, grabbed my equipment and came back into Manhattan to meet my client. It was a short session, but very successful. Head shot sessions do not need to be over an hour long, but usually I take time with clients and go to different locations to get the lifestyle feel of a modern head shot. When you take an individual, whether an actor, singer, writer, etc, casting directors tend to want to see them in their natural elements so they can imagine this person in their show, commercial, movie, etc. Nothing wrong with studio head shots. If you have a very good photographer who takes their time and makes sure the lighting is done right, then you will get beautiful head shots. Because we were limited in time and location, I met my client in Grand Central, found a secluded area with enough lighting to work with (which was fine since I also brought my torch light and reflector) and we got working. I had Raquel change into a blue shirt to help her gorgeous eyes show more, and below are the end results. Tips for anyone doing head shots, shoot at a higher angle so the client is looking a bit up at you to open their eyes. Another very good tip is to get multiple angles. Raquel actually liked her left side more, but as a client ask to get different angles so you can see what your face looks likes. You never know if a side of your profile actually looks best when taken by a professional photographer.

Engagement Session in New York Central Park-V&J

What a fun Engagement photography session! Love New York City in winter and any weather. It was definitely a cold day a few weeks ago, but Vanessa and Jermaine were such troopers that here we were in Central Park in New York...walking around looking like we were having fun for their engagement session...and we were! Despite the cold, these two carried on and made sure the weather didn't dampen our moods or our photo shoot! Good job guys! Here's a few teasers from the shoot! Hope to get to edit them all soon...cannot wait! The first is by a tunnel/bridge by the upper east side. We went through more areas on our way to Strawberry Field where John Lennon is memorialized with the simple work "IMAGINE." I LOVE how my August wedding couple from Staten Island did not hesitate to lay down and take the amazing shot! Actually...several shots. There were many tourists who were standing around wanting to take pictures with the famous emblem on the ground, but we were also not shy about standing our ground to make sure we were next...after all this was an engagement session and the others around us was more forgiving with our enthusiasm. As soon as we were up, off they went and there goes my bride and groom lying in concrete gazing at each other's eyes. Always wanted to do this idea for an e-shoot and finally accomplished it! Thanks V & J! You two are awesome for making this engagement shoot a smash hit. I have so much more pictures to show everyone, but have a lot of other pictures to edit first so please stay tuned and bear with me. I'm also posting pictures at my Facebook page here. Just IMAGINE all the possibilities and what the future holds for these two...cannot wait until August for their wedding in New Jersey!

We found a wooden bench at the end of The Ramble and it was such a scenic sight I had to take pics with it and have the forrest in the background. This was one of my favorite pictures because my assistant (which is also my wonderful and talented husband) was making jokes towards V& J making them laugh. Sometimes I need to tell hubby to tone it down, but sometimes he knows the right moment to make people laugh and the end result is this fun pic of V&J just happy as can be in their engagement shoot. :-).

Talk about LOVE BIRDS!!!!

Portraits Are More Than Paper - Why photographs are very important and lasts forever....

Today I read a post by Jeanine Thurston, re-posted by so many photographers and non-photographers alike, and the letter that created the post stirred old memories that I too had to post it: http://fototails.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/a-letter-on-my-doorstep-portraits-are-more-than-paper/ After reading the letter, I cannot help but feel this person's regret of not understanding how pictures are so much more lasting than "trivial" items. Portraits and photographs  are more than a piece of paper, since it helps memorialize an event or a person or a special memory of a newborn being born or children growing up with families, a wedding, and more. From time to time I do get the "oh no! there she is again!" when I take out my camera and start photographing family and friends when we're together privately or out so I can capture those memories.  Many say their memories are in their mind and do not need photographs or videos of an event, but for me, personally, I love having a tangible visual of an event or memory with my husband, family and friends. Why do I do it? I do it because I know memories are fleeting. Getting older, my memory is not what it was years ago...and that is scary. How many times have we told ourselves I'll remember this moment forever...but later stumble upon a picture (maybe years or weeks later) taken by someone else and you truly forgot that moment occurred? I LOVE going through my pictures from time to time and remembering time spent with those I love. I have folders of digital images going back from 1999 with a miscellaneous folder where I added scanned images of older paper photographs.

Maybe some think that going overboard...and some may think its not...but each of us must do what feels right and capturing memories the way I know how feels the right way. I also take pictures because I know often time pictures are all we may have left of someone one day. A sad thought but true...and it was true for Karen L. who wrote the letter. Her letter has made this past hour an emotional roller coaster, leaving people wondering why I look like I've been crying...so here I am pretending to have a cold, but in reality I'm remembering the feeling of not having that picture I wanted and needed of someone who suddenly passed on. When my father passed away in 2007, I was creating a memorial board of him, and realized that the last picture I took with him and I alone was taken...well I couldn't find one. Honestly the last good one (not blurry or anything else) was from 2001 when I graduated college. There was one picture from my birthday party my dad threw for me at his house in 2005 that had me, him and my siblings together, and I had to cut out my siblings so I can frame that picture of me and my dad in my apartment. The picture was also blurry, but it was all I had standing next to him. Other pictures before he passed was of me taking the picture, or a group picture. Just remembering that realization made me panic. This was the eve of my father's wake and I'm scrambling to find pictures of my dad and me and I couldn't find a one.

Photographs of any event or a portrait of your family or pictures with friends are something that should not be taken for granted. For many they are not just a want or a need, but a priceless memory that can be passed on. If you haven't read Karen L's letter, read on: http://fototails.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/a-letter-on-my-doorstep-portraits-are-more-than-paper/

Thank you Jeanine for posting this letter. Karen L. and many more are in my prayers.
